Music

Majority of the music my generation tends to consume these days consists of loud beats and repetitive notes, with a few exceptions. Of course I love this type of music – its the music I grew up with – the songs I danced along to with my friends – the ones I played on repeat alone in my room. As I grow older, my preference in music as with many things, changes – whether it be the language sung or the tempo.

But when I was asked to listen to a piece of classical music today, I found myself realising how little time I’ve spent exploring other musical genres. Classical music, unlike most of the music I listen to rarely has lyrics incorporated into it which subsequently led me to pay attention to other things I would have otherwise disregarded, like the instruments playing, the expressions of the musicians faces, and the feelings the song evoked.

In the following weeks, I’m going to continue to listen to music I never have heard of before – different languages, different instruments. There’s so much of the world I have yet to explore, and there’s very little exploring I can do right now, isolated in my room in the middle of a pandemic, but a way I can is through music!
